What exactly is "academic freedom"? Who has it, in what circumstances, and why should we care?

In today's political climate, the intersection of academic freedom and freedom of speech are murky. Historically contested, academic freedom is essential to the mission of scientific discovery that scholars should have the freedom to teach or communicate ideas or facts without being targeted. The first amendment protects citizens from having their expression regulated. Even though these two concepts are related, they are important legal distinctions.

This forum will explore what is academic freedom, the intersections with free expression, and the aspects of public perception and image of an institution when faced with controversial or unpopular subjects.
