Veterans Day - November 11, 2016 - Tri-Cities Washington

In honor of our Veterans and active military in the Tri-Cities, there will be a couple of Veterans Day programs on November 11. In addition, various franchises and local restaurants will be offering  free meals, free coffee, free car washes, and free haircuts on this day. You can also visit any Washington State Park and U.S. National Park on November 11 for free!

Note: Not all franchise locations participate in their national chain's Veterans Day programs. The author has listed the franchises in the Tri-Cities but has not verified their participation so be sure to contact your nearest establishment of interest.

Keep in mind that most businesses require proof of military service, which can include a VA Universal Access Card, Military I.D., DD-214 (Discharge Papers), Veterans Service Organization Card (VSO's include groups like the VFW, DAV, AmVets, MOAA, FRA, and the American Legion), or in some cases businesses will accept a picture of the Veteran in uniform.

Kennewick - Veterans Day observance at the Regional Veterans Memorial 
At 11 a.m., members of various organizations will take part in the annual Veterans Day observance at the Regional Veterans Memorial located in the east end of Columbia Park that was built to honor all the veterans of Tri-Cities region.

State Rep. Brad Klippert, R-Kennewick, is scheduled to speak, and a representative from U.S. Sen. Patty Murray’s office will be on hand, along with other dignitaries. Music is planned and the Richland VFW will offer a gun salute.

Pasco - American Legion Post 34
Across the river, Pasco American Legion Post 34 is presenting a Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. at the flagpoles at Columbia Memorial Gardens (224 S 24th Ave. in Pasco).

Prosser Veterans Day Parade
The annual Prosser Veterans Day Parade starts at 11 a.m. on Friday to recognize and honor local veterans.

The parade begins at Keene-Riverview Elementary School, 832 Park Ave., and follows along Bennett Avenue, Seventh Street, Prosser Avenue, Sixth Street, Meade Avenue and Market Street.


Veteran's Day Weekend of Remembrance - November 11 & 12

To honor our Veterans and Active Service men and women, for both Friday and Saturday we will be offering free admission to all Veterans, Active Service Members, and their immediate families.

We will be accepting donated cans of food, protein bars, and bottled water to give to the Veterans Opportunity Center and Columbia Basin Veterans Coalition!

Veterans Day Program and Dance

Dance by Beth Trost, is offering a Veterans Day program and dance to honor all veterans on Veterans Day. You do not have to be a member of the Eagles Club to attend the event.

Featuring Color guard, Tri-City Young Marines, guest speakers, performers, prize drawings and more! DJ Dance music, optional turkey dinner.

The 41st Annual Columbia River Classic Fun Run

 A Columbia River Classic 10-mile and two-mile fun run is Saturday at the USS Triton Submarine Memorial Park museum, 3240 Richardson Rd., Richland. The two-mile race begins at 9:30 a.m., and the 10-mile race begins at 10 a.m.
To register, visit Paper Street Brewery (701 The parkway in Richland) from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday. All Proceeds go to Camp Patriot.

Army Corps of Engineers Fee Free Day

The Army Corps of Engineers will waive day use fees for veterans, active and reserve component service members, and their families at the more than 2,200 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide on Veterans Day, November 11.

The fee waiver requires only verbal confirmation of service. The waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities such as group picnic shelters.

U.S. National Park Service Fee Free Day

This Veterans Day, November 11, 2016, the National Park Service is waiving entrance fees to all parks for all visitors. And, don't forget to join us for a variety of programs and events across the country. 

Fee waiver includes: entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.

Washington State Parks Fee Free Day

In honor of Veteran's Day, November 11 is a "free day" and the Discover Pass is not required to visit a state park. Please note, free days apply only to day use (not overnight stays or rented facilities).

A Discover Pass is still required to access lands managed by the Washington State departments of Natural Resources and Fish & Wildlife. Note: the Sacajawea State Park Interpretive Center in Pasco is closed for the season.

On Friday, November 11, from open to close, veterans and active duty military can choose one of seven free signature meals. Must present valid Veteran’s form of identification or be in uniform. This year all current and former military personnel will also receive a $5 coupon that can be redeemed between November 12 and November 27, 2016.

Pasco Naval Air Station Photo Exhibit

Admission: $8 adults, $6 students/seniors, kids 5 and under free - annual memberships are also available for purchase

The exhibit includes dozens of amazing black and white photos (courtesy of the Franklin Co Museum) of the Naval Air Station buildings and personnel during WWII.

There are four custom-built display cases that hold memorabilia, photos and artifacts from NAS Pasco, as well as, painstakingly created, authentic aircraft models of the planes used for training at the air station.

Large posters are also an important part of the exhibit with many stories about the pilots, instructors, WAVES, civilians and military personnel that called NAS Pasco home during WWII.
